November 2007, Pacific: Viti Levu, Fiji

Back on the main island in Fiji, Viti Levu, we rented a car and went for a drive. It takes 8 hours to drive, so we had two main goals – to find a comfortable and non-package-tour-style resort, and to get close to Beqa where the famous shark dives (check aquatrek.com or fiji-sharks.com) are, so that Andreas could do this dive. We managed both, but Andreas missed the shark dive since they were not available on any of the four days we had on the island. Everyone who did it raves about this dive, so if you are on Fiji, book early!

The drive on the island was pretty and rather slow, since the roads get rather bumpy soon after one leaves Nadi.

Mango season - the best season!!!

It simply cannot et any more lush than this.

We found our resort - Crusoe's Retreat. It was hidden away in a bay that took quite an adventurous drive from the main road, but it was worth it! It is on the land owned by the Namaqumaqua village, it keeps the village busy and paid, and all of its staff is from this village.

Lovely traditional bures in a meticulously tended garden, very comfort inside and outside, and truly excellent service.

Walking along the beach into the village.

Enjoying the sea with friends.

And a bit of circus...

Enjoying the pool and exploring dad's beer glass.

It's almost Christmas.

Beautiful mangrove forest in the next bay, with channels stretching far inland. They get very dark in the dusk!

Flowers of Fiji...

Fiji's underwater scenery.
